The Orbis Flying Eye Hospital Completes Successful Training Project for Women from Conflict Zones
Under the leadership of, and thanks to, the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and Qatar Charity, the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital has delivered its first international training programme since the pandemic. For a week at the beginning of November, a group of gifted women in eye care from conflict areas receiving humanitarian support from Qatar, undertook simulation training on board the unique aircraft.
This first-of-its-kind programme was designed to bring critical training opportunities to those who may not normally have access, so that they can support more people within their community. Participants from Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, joined Orbis’s dedicated medical volunteers and staff, for in-depth simulation training on ophthalmic surgical techniques and nursing. This project falls under a new QFFD initiative called ‘Women in Conflict Zones’.
Just as pilots learn to fly planes through simulation training, this programme used virtual reality, cutting-edge prosthetics, and highly sophisticated, life-like mannequins so that the eye care professionals could build their skills and confidence. The dedicated group focused on absorbing as much knowledge as possible – the training utilised 200 artificial eyes during the week.
Esraa Al Naihooman, an ophthalmology resident from Libya said: “It was an amazing week. It was so concentrated and full of information. The expert volunteers were generous and shared everything they have learned over the years. It’s incredible how much we’ve learned in a short period of time. Imagine if we had more time for this, we would master everything! We don’t have access to the same equipment and it’s not familiar to have this kind of simulation training at my hospital. Every small detail during the training was making me happy; I learned a lot.”
“Women ophthalmologists are increasing in my country, and we’re becoming more competitive in the field. It’s good for us to have access to this type of training and learn to apply the perfect techniques, step by step.”

Qatar Fund for Development Signs an Agreement with Tomorrow’s Youth Organization to implement Bokrah 2 Project in Palestine
Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has signed an agreement with Tomorrow’s Youth Organization (TYO) to implement the Bokrah 2 project in Palestine, which aims to enhance sustainable development goals through the support of education, mental health, employment, and women’s empowerment in the West Bank.
Since 2017, in partnership with TYO, QFFD has been able to provide educational and psychological services to more than 12,000 disadvantaged children, women and families in Palestine at its leading center in Nablus, which has become one of the most important educational centers in the region.
QFFD is committed to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals; the partnership between Tomorrow’s Youth and Qatar Fund for Development will achieve inclusive and sustainable development by empowering the most neglected children, youth, and women to reach their development potential as healthy, determined, and active members of their society. The Bokrah 2 program responds to the main needs and provides 1) quality education; 2) mental health services; 3) employment opportunities; and 4) women empowerment
HE Khalifa Al-Kuwari, Director General of QFFD said: “With high unemployment and inequality in education exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis, the current situation requires multiple responses to these issues from the relevant sectors to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, who face multiple humanitarian and developmental challenges. We are honored to continue to support our successful partner, Tomorrow’s Youth Organization, to meet the key needs of the Palestinian population, such as providing educational opportunities, mental health services, employment opportunities and empowerment programs for women.”
Mr. Hani Hikmat al-Masri, Founder of Tomorrow’s Youth Organization, said: “TYO is truly grateful for the continued support of QFFD in launching the second phase of our partnership in Palestine. Bokra 2 will empower the most marginalized children, youth, and women to be able to reach their development potential as healthy and resilient members of the community. In alignment with the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, Bokra 2 is a 4-million-dollar grant, provided by QFFD to TYO, which is dedicated to empowering the most marginalized Palestinians through education, employment, mental health, and women empowerment programs — all of which aim to ensure a decent life for current and future generations in Palestine.”

ALL-FEMALE AFGHAN ROBOTICS TEAM RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY AT QATAR FOUNDATION WITH JOINT FUNDING FROM QATAR FUND FOR DEVELOPMENT

‘Afghan Dreamers’ were flown to Qatar amid Afghanistan crisis

Doha, Qatar, September 7, 2021: The members of an all-female Afghan robotics team evacuated from Afghanistan to Qatar are to continue their education through scholarships to study at Qatar Foundation’s Education City, jointly funded by Qatar Fund for Development

The team, known as the ‘Afghan Dreamers’, were flown to Doha on a flight organized by Qatari officials after their home country came under Taliban rule and are now being housed at Education City, where they will receive scholarships that enable them to keep pursuing their studies through a strategic partnership between Qatar Foundation (QF) and Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD).

QF’s Education City houses the largest education ecosystem of its kind in the world, comprising eight universities – including branch campuses of some of the world’s leading universities – and both mainstream and specialized schools, and offers education spanning K-12 to postdoctoral level. The strategic partnership that has enabled the Afghan students to study at Education City reflects QF’s belief that nothing should stand in the way of education and its commitment to ensuring people from Qatar and beyond can realize their potential, while also further demonstrating how Qatar and its people show support and solidarity for those experiencing hardship and upheaval.

“These talented, creative students have been living through a time of uncertainty and upheaval, and at Qatar Foundation we want to do whatever we can to ease their concerns in the present while also helping them to look to the future,” said Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation.

“By providing them with scholarships to study at Education City, their education can now continue uninterrupted. We are currently assessing their specific needs to ensure they receive the learning experience within our schools and our pre-university preparatory program that best suits their abilities and their goals.

“Our priority is to ensure that these students feel safe, cared for, and confident in the knowledge that their education will not be affected by this immensely difficult period in their lives.”

His Excellency Mr. Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari, Director General of Qatar Fund for Development, said: “The educational program jointly funded by QF and QFFD provides high-quality technical training in the use of modern technologies which will enable Afghani female students to acquire the skills and knowledge that will allow them to be appropriately qualified and in demand within the labor market.

“We hope that this program and the strategic partnership between QFFD, QF, and the Digital Citizen Fund will renew hope for a new generation of Afghani girls.”

Roya Mahboob, the founder of the Digital Citizen Fund, parent organization of the Afghan Girls Robotics Team, said: “The team is excited and grateful for this opportunity to study abroad.

“Qatar Foundation’s Education City, a remarkable campus made of up of leading academic and research institutions from around the world, is a place where the girls can realize their full potential. The children of Afghanistan are eager and ready to continue making great contributions to the world.”

At QF and in collaboration with QFFD, the Afghan Dreamers will be supported in continuing their high school studies and preparing for higher education, with placements being based on their educational assessments and their goals. They will also have the opportunity to keep enhancing their robotics skills through the facilities and expertise available at QF member Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and QF partner universities Texas A&M University at Qatar and Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.

The students travelled to Qatar after their parent organization, the Digital Citizen Fund, worked with Qatar’s government to secure the necessary visas.
