Qatar and OCHA sign a Four-Year Financing Agreement
Qatar announced un-earmarked funding of USD 40 million over four years – USD10 million annually from 2017 to 2020 – to support the core budget of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The signing ceremony was held on the sidelines of 17th Doha Forum, between the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Stephen O’Brien and H.E. Mr. Khalifa Al Kuwari, Director General of the Qatar Fund for Development, in the presence of H.E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar,
Thanks to this timely contribution, Qatar ranked the second on the list of major donor countries to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) is one of OCHA’s strategic partners and plays an important global role in responding to humanitarian crises. In 2012, Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) that aims at enhancing joint coordination and improving humanitarian response. This relationship was further strengthened after the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Dr. Ahmed Al Meraikhi of Qatar as his Humanitarian Envoy in December 2016
“Through this generous, long-lasting support to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the State and Government of Qatar demonstrate full commitment to helping those in need around the world by providing impartial humanitarian assistance through the multilateral organizations,” said Stephen O’Brien.
Al Kuwari said, “The Qatar Fund for Development stresses that strengthening the capacity of humanitarian institutions demonstrates the Fund’s ability as a key partner to find solutions to the international crises. This support aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the field of humanitarian response.”
Mr. O’Brien conducted a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and other senior officials in Doha to extend his sincere thanks for their support, to brief them on the current challenges facing the humanitarian organizations and to explore ways to continue the participation of Qatar in the multilateral organization.
