Qatar contributes $ 10 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
Qatar donated $ 10 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria during the 5th replenishment conference of the Fund in Montreal, Canada.
Minister of Public Health H.E. Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari announced the donation during the conference, in the presence of a large number of heads of states and governments. The donation will be directed to the countries which are of strategic importance to the Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD), especially the Middle East countries
H.E. Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health said, “I am pleased to announce on behalf of the Emir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani the full support of my country to the great goal of eliminating three pandemics which are considered the deadliest in the world – AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria – by the year 2030.”
She added that the $10 million is the first contribution made by Qatar pledging to continue supporting the Global Fund during the next years. Additionally, the minister commended the partnership with the Global Fund that plays a vital role in eliminating the three pandemics around the world.
Qatar is a Key Partner
“This contribution is also part of Qatar’s commitment to being a key partner with donor countries. This commitment has been clearly demonstrated by supporting humanitarian and development programs and providing grants to more than 100 countries. The State of Qatar has recently pledged during the World Humanitarian Summit to contribute $ 10 billion to the humanitarian and development programs over the next ten years,” She added
Supporting Humanitarian and Development Initiatives
The Minister of Public Health asserted that Qatar’s increasing support to various global initiatives, aimed at alleviating the suffering of people and achieving sustainable development in various countries, which reflects Qatar’s National Vision 2030; the humanitarian and development assistance have become an integral part of Qatar’s foreign policy.
“Following the Global Fund’s approach, our State’s efforts are not limited to filling the humanitarian and development gaps through the assistance provided, but it also includes high-quality solutions that ensure carrying out innovative and alternative programs that contribute to promoting aids,” Al Kuwari added
Eliminating Epidemics
Al Kuwari stressed the State of Qatar’s commitment to cooperate with the Global Fund, donor countries and international organizations to eliminate the three pandemics affecting the lives of millions of people around the world as well as its commitment to the public health, social justice and development. This contribution will also provide the Global Fund access to sustainable health services.”
The conference aims to achieve commitments amounting to $13 billion to finance activities related to the prevention and treatment of these diseases during the 2017-2019 period.
The donor and recipient governments, private sector, civil society institutions and affected communities have participated in the conference to eliminate AIDS, and malaria by 2030. The Conference aims also at helping women and girls who bear the burden of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis patients. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was created in 2002 as an innovative financing mechanism that seeks to rapidly raise and disburse funding for programs that reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria around the world. It is structured as a partnership between governments, United Nations, developed countries, developing countries, the private sector, civil society and affected communities and is subject to the UN standards. It aims at collecting donations amounting to $ 13 billion as a funding for its programs.
Fighting AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is at the top of the United Nations’ agenda. As a result, the third Sustainable Development Goal: “Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages”, which aims to promote health care was adopted.
The participation of the State of Qatar in this World Conference is of a great importance as supporting the humanitarian and development issues is an important priority for Qatar. H.E. Fahad bin Mohammed Yousif Kafood, Qatar’s ambassador in Canada and the Minister of Public Health and his delegation attended the opening ceremony.
