Qatar donates over $26 million to UNHCR in 2017
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has received over $26 million contributions from the State of Qatar in year 2017, making Qatar the UNHCR’s top donor in the Middle East and North Africa region.
According to the UNHCR 2017 report on contributions, the State of Qatar was ranked 19th on the list of donors. Thanks to these generous donations, the UNHCR has been able to provide life-saving assistance to hundreds of thousands of forcibly-displaced women, children and men in Iraq, Yemen, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Somalia and other countries.
Commenting on the importance of providing support to IDPs and refugees around the world, Khalid Khalifa, UNHCR Regional Representative for the GCC, said, “As 20 people have to flee their homes in one minute, vital contributions such as those provided by Qatar are urgently needed. Qatar played a key role in the UNHCR’s response to emergencies.”
He added, “Thanks to this generous support, UNHCR has provided shelter, health services, cash assistance, education and many other basic aids to the most vulnerable people around the world”.
“Qatar has a long history of addressing the needs of the oppressed and those affected by conflicts, especially those forced to flee their countries,” said Khalifa Al-Kuwari, Director General of the Qatar Fund for Development, noting the importance of UNHCR’s work in this regard and his aspiration to work with UNHCR to alleviate the suffering of IDPs around the world.
Qatar has recently responded to UNHCR’s appeal related to the Rohingya refugee crisis. The total number of new refugees reached 650,000 since August 2017. The Qatar Fund for Development provided $6 million to provide basic needs and shelter for displaced Iraqis.
Since 2012, the State of Qatar has provided more than $76 million to UNHCR projects for displaced people and refugees around the world, as well as assistance to refugees through local partners.
