Qatar Fund for Development and Qatar Red Crescent Society Launch Multidisciplinary Medical Mission in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana

Georgetown, Guyana – During an official visit to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), in collaboration with the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), launched a multidisciplinary medical mission aimed at strengthening healthcare services and conducting a comprehensive assessment of the country’s health sector needs.
The mission brought together a team of 9 medical specialists from Hamad Medical Corporation and Sidra Medicine, including pediatric interventional cardiologists, pediatric urologists, obstetricians and gynecologists, and catheterization laboratory technologist, to address critical health challenges by delivering advanced surgical care, cardiac interventions, and specialized medical consultations to patients in need.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by H.E. Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Health of Guyana, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Rumaihi, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Guyana, Mr. Mohamed Ahmed Al Beshri, Assistant Secretary-General for Communication and Resource Development at QRCS, and Mr. Youssef Ahmed Al Mulla, Acting Manager of the Humanitarian Aid Department at QFFD.
Dr. Anthony said: “We have selected a number of patients, both children and adults, some suffering from cardiac diseases and others from gynecological conditions. The team will conduct consultations for these patients and perform advanced surgical procedures that are not currently available in Guyana. They will also provide expert consultations for complex medical cases.”
H.E. Mr. Mohammed Al-Rumaihi said: “This initiative reflects our commitment to strengthening humanitarian ties between the peoples of Qatar and Guyana, and embodies the enduring friendship between the leaderships of our two nations—both of whom attach great importance to advancing cooperation in the fields of development and health. The State of Qatar reaffirms its unwavering partnership in supporting Guyana’s journey toward progress in healthcare and sustainable development. This project represents the first step in what we envision as a long-term and promising pathway of humanitarian and development collaboration between our countries.”
Mr. Yuosef Ahmed Al Mulla, Acting Manager of the Humanitarian Aid Department at QFFD, said: “Qatar Fund for Development remains committed to supporting those in need around the world, whether through health, education, or economic development. This project embodies our belief that sustainable progress can only be achieved through partnership, solidarity, and tangible action. It also reflects our dedication to building sustainable healthcare systems that improve lives and strengthen communities.”
Mr. Mohamed Al Beshri said: “We come bearing greetings and appreciation from the people of Qatar to this friendly nation and its generous people. Through this mission, we aim to deliver specialized surgical interventions for critical medical cases across several vital disciplines, while ensuring that the necessary equipment and medical supplies are provided. The mission also focuses on transferring medical expertise to local professionals through training and hands-on experience.”
By the conclusion of the seven-day mission, the Qatari medical team successfully performed approximately 120 specialized surgeries, including pediatric and cardiac procedures—and provided over 200 medical consultations. Essential medicines and medical supplies, donated by Sidra Medicine and Hamad Medical Corporation.
This initiative reaffirms the State of Qatar’s steadfast commitment to humanitarian assistance and sustainable development, particularly by enhancing access to quality healthcare in Latin America and the Caribbean. It also underscores QFFD’s dedication to supporting health systems and empowering communities around the world.
