Qatar Fund for Development finances the resources of The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in the total amount of 25 Million US Dollars
Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have signed a contribution agreement to finance the core resources of the United Nations Organization through a Two-year cycle contribution 2021-2022. In addition to the Provision of multisectoral support to Palestinian refugees in Syria.
The agreement aims to support the basic resources of UNRWA with an amount of 18 million US dollars, in order to strengthen UNRWA’s pivotal role in protecting the rights of Palestinian refugees. Side by side with the delivery of a comprehensive additional support to Palestinian refugees in Syria across health, education and economic development sectors with a total amount of 7 million USD. This agreement will ensure noble work of the agency to continue, while enhancing its role in the international community to improve the situation of the Palestinian people in Palestine and hosting countries.
UNRWA is mandated to provide assistance and protection to registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance.
HE Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, QFFD Director General, said: “This core contribution agreement with the support of UNRWA for two years will guarantee the continues support of our brothers in Palestine. The access to quality education and primary health care services as well as the economic development sector for individuals are the basic rights that QFFD aims to provide a decent life for our Palestinian brothers who will benefit from the services of the UNRWA.”
During his visit to Doha, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini signed the partnership agreement with QFFD Director General HE Khalifa Jassim Al Kuwari “UNRWA is extremely proud of its partnership with QFFD and the government of Qatar, said Mr. Lazzarini. Their regular support over several decades has greatly contributed to the Agency’s ability to deliver health, education and lifesaving services to Palestine refugees.” In commenting on the timeliness of this outstanding show of support, he said: “At a time of intense pressure on our Agency, the generosity of the government of Qatar and QFFD sends a clear message of solidarity to the Palestine refugees.”
