Qatar Fund for development Signs Core Contribution Agreement Worth 16 Million US $ To Fund UNRWA Main Resources

Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have signed a contribution agreement to finance the core resources of the United Nations Organization on the sidelines of the Doha Forum 2018. The agreement was signed by H.E. Khalifa Bin Jassim Al Kuwari, the Director General of the QFFD, and Mr. Pierre Krähenbühl, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)

The agreement aims to support the basic resources of UNRWA with an amount of 16 Million US $, in order to strengthen UNRWA’s pivotal role in protecting the rights of Palestinian refugees and helping them obtain quality education and basic health services in Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

This agreement will ensure noble work of the agency to continue, while enhancing its role in the international community in order to improve the situation of the Palestinian people.

HE Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, QFFD Director General, said: “This agreement, with the support of UNRWA, will ensure the continued assistance of our Palestinian brothers, as they are entitled to enjoy their full rights and enjoy a decent life through access to quality education and basic health services, ” He added that this agreement “is in line with the orientation of the State of Qatar under its wise government in terms of its interest in any initiative in the benefit of the Palestinian brothers.” He reiterated that “Qatar funding to UNRWA is very important in order to ensure the sustainability of the Agency’s effective role in easing the burden of life on Palestinian refugees and to complete their educational path without obstacles”

The Commissioner-General warmly welcomed this strong expression of Qatar’s commitment to Palestine refugees: “In 2018, Qatar made a major difference in enabling UNRWA to open the schools on time for 530’000 boys and girls studying in our 711 schools. This will be fondly remembered. The new agreement signed today with the Qatar Fund for Development is an important step in the crucial effort to stabilize UNRWA’s financial situation by ensuring increased predictability of funding. I am deeply grateful for Qatar’s trust and partnership”
