Qatar Fund for Development visits Za’tari camp to oversee QFFD funded health programs
A high level delegation from Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), visited the Za’tari camp in Jordan to oversee the situation in the camp and QFFD funded health programs. Through the funding, QFFD aims to facilitate the inclusion of Syrian refugees and reduce pressure on services to host communities and increase flexibility of health providers.
The delegation was accompanied by representatives from Qatar Charity (QC), Qatar Red Crescent society (QRCs) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and were briefed on the latest developments regarding health centers, how they work in the camp and the coordination between Qatar Charity and Qatar Red Crescent with the UNHCR and the most important aspects of the work they are doing in Jordan for Syrian refugees.
With the increasing pressure on health systems due to large influx of refugee populations, it has become a priority to support the capacity of health care services in host countries. The funded programs provide primary health care services and, where possible secondary and tertiary care, which is specialized referral from primary and secondary care, to both Syrian refugees and host communities. This support comes in various forms, including direct support through the provision of equipment and supplies, capacity-building and the strengthening of health system.
Qatar Charity
With the support from QFFD, Qatar Charity is operating the Comprehensive Qatari Center at village number 12 in Za’tari camp. This project aims to contribute to improving the living conditions of the Syrian refugees in Za’tari camp in Jordan. The Center seeks to increase the coverage of vaccination services for children and women of childbearing age within the camp and to provide reproductive health services including family planning, counseling and care of pregnant women. It also contributes to awareness raising and health education of refugees in the camp, as well as providing diagnosis and treatment services to patients coming to the center. QFFD support comes from a $ 50 million grant made by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, to the benefit of his Syrian brothers.
Qatar Red Crescent society
Qatari clinics under the supervision of the Qatar Red Crescent Society have been providing primary health care services for over 4 years and are a major contributor to the health care system within the camp. Qatari clinics are located in Area 8, which has the largest population in the camp. The clinics provide life-saving health services (counseling and treatment) for all ages. It has been providing dental services for the last 3 years, as well as providing prenatal care. QFFD support comes from the $ 50 million grant made by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, to the benefit of his Syrian brothers.
The existing project aims at ensuring sustainable and equitable access to quality primary and secondary health care in the camp through its referral system for secondary and tertiary care services as well as promoting community participation in health care through operating the primary health center, where the center was able to provide health care services to 4000 beneficiaries.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
UNHCR provides primary, secondary and tertiary care services free of charge to vulnerable Syrians in camps and urban areas. The comprehensive health care package for refugees in Alazraq and Zaatari camps includes primary health care, reproductive health, dental care, mental health and nutritional care, and referrals for secondary and tertiary care outside camps. Syrian refugees also benefit from the cash-for-health program, which has benefited more than 6,000 Syrians since its inception in November 2015
Qatar Development Fund has supported the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to provide primary health care and referral services to secondary and tertiary care, which benefited 34,816 beneficiaries.
