QFFD Finances Water and Sanitation Sector in Mosul City A US $ 3 million Grant in Cooperation with UNICEF and Qatar Red Crescent

Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has provided a humanitarian grant to support the water and sanitation sector in Mosul City and its surroundings, focusing on the rehabilitation of water networks in the region, distribution networks and water supply stations.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Misfer Bin Hamad Al Shahwani, QFFD’s Executive Director of Development Projects Department, and Mr. Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, on behalf of UNICEF.

Grant aims at enhancing water quality control in Mosul, improving water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in Primary Healthcare Centers, improving them in primary schools and developing a Water Safety Plan for the Ninewa Governorate. Furthermore, the project also aims at providing children and their families with access to adequate and safe water services in their areas of return and access to sanitation services in health and education facilities. In addition, it is designed to strengthen the role of the Water Directorate in Nineveh Governorate and build its capacity to provide integrated water resources. said Mr. Misfer Bin Hamad Al Shahwani, QFFD’s Executive Director of Development Projects Department, “The generous contribution from the Qatar Development Fund is critical for UNICEF’s efforts to assist children in Iraq, allowing us to increase access to clean water and improve water and sanitation facilities including in schools and communities affected by the violence in the country” said Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. “It is worth mentioning that the project will be implemented in cooperation with UNICEF and Qatar Red Crescent to support water and sanitation sector for displaced civilians returning home to and around Mosul.
