Qatar Fund for development (QFFD) signed an agreement with it strategic partner the Food and Agriculture Organization (FOA), to help Somalia in building climate-resilience and take shock-informed anticipatory action.

Somalia is highly vulnerable to recurrent shocks, with colliding and cumulative effects. The country has been recurrently affected by droughts, flash and riverine flooding, cyclones, locusts, disease outbreaks, conflict, and subsequent large-scale. These shocks have led to continual disruption of livelihoods, increased vulnerability, and poverty, resulting in acute hunger and malnutrition.

“We gather all here today to witness the signing of urgent anticipatory action agreement. We trust that the initiative will support farming and pastoral communities at risk in advance to reduce threats withing the marginalized groups. More to that, the call of anticipatory action will help deliver effective solutions that is estimated to assist 1,850 farming smallholders and respond to emergency agricultural livelihoods in advance.” Said Mr. Misfer Al-Shahwani, Deputy Director General of projects, Qatar Fund for Development

“FAO welcomes the commitment of the State of Qatar to support vulnerable farming communities in Somalia. Through this first ever partnership with the Qatar Fund for Development, we will work together to save and reinforce livelihoods and help families to anticipate shocks such as drought and prevent and control animal diseases by increasing and diversifying their food production and protecting their livestock – an essential source of food and income.” Said Ms Beth Bechdol ,FAO’s Deputy Director-General,

And to ease this dilemma QFFD with FOA is aiming thought this project to achieve the goal enhancing smallholder agriculture and livestock production through climate-resilient and shock-informed anticipatory action. This will serve as the objective of this project. It will include, maximizing and diversifying farmers’ production in anticipation of a drought, drought-related spread of animal disease is mitigated to protect household food security, nutrition, and income and lastly improving access to water to protect critical livelihood assets of pastoralist populations.

Additionally this project is a part of the state of Qatar’s pledge of 100 Million USD to support Countries dealing with climate change, natural hazards and environmental challenges, and build back their resilience to the devastating impacts.

Qatar Fund for Development supports core resources of the United Nations Development Program with an amount of $ 16 million over two years (2021-2022)

Its programs also focus on poverty reduction, which is the first goal of the sustainable development goals, in addition to recovery, crisis prevention, conflict reduction, and early recovery from disasters in the fastest possible way. The program works to find sustainable solutions to the global warming problem.

The agreement to support basic resources for a period of two years (2021-2022) was signed by His Excellency Mr. Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari, Director General of Qatar Fund for Development, and Mr. Achim Steiner, Director of the United Nations Development Program. During the signing, the two parties agreed to cooperate in pursuit of the sustainable development goals at the national level. Global.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, is a common roadmap to achieve peace and prosperity for people and the planet at the same time. The SDGs is an urgent call for all countries to work in the global partnership to end poverty, improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth while simultaneously tackling climate change and preserving our oceans and forests.

It is worth noting that the State of Qatar is one of the first countries to support the establishment of a group of laboratories to accelerate the development impact in over 78 countries. These pioneering labs were launched in January 2019, in over sixty developing countries to become an integral part of UNDP teams and infrastructure in each country.

Qatar Fund for Development and Global Green Growth Institute hosted a virtual event on the sidelines of the 2021 High-level Political Forum

Under the theme Building back better to realize the SDGs in LDCs: Accelerating action to achieve inclusive, sustainable, resilient recovery – approaches on the road to the LDC5

On July 14, Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), co-hosted a virtual event on the sidelines of the 2021 High-level Political Forum (HLPF). Under the theme of “Building back better to realize the SDGs in LDCs: Accelerating action to achieve inclusive, sustainable, resilient recovery – approaches on the road to the LDC5 conference in Doha,” prominent figures and experts have been invited to give speeches and take part in a panel discussion, including HE Ban Ki-moon, President and Chair of GGGI and Eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ambassador Courtenay Rattray, the newly appointed UN High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS), and HE Khalifa Al-Kuwari, Director-General of QFFD.

The aim of the event was to bring together high-level representatives from least developed countries (LDCs) and leading experts from international organizations to discuss ways in which the international community could help speed up the acceleration of climate action post-COVID-19, especially in LDCs and Small Island Developing States. It also served as a platform to reflect on the importance of ensuring international support measure, building back better policies and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Given that most LDCs have been heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, much of the progress on advancing the SDGs has declined or reversed. During the event, panelists emphasized the importance of taking urgent action to deliver inclusive and tangible solutions to build back better to achieve the SDGs, especially in key areas such as reducing poverty, improving health, promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and taking action to combat climate change.

“This pandemic has added yet an additional burden to the already existing challenges faced by LDCs, making the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 a far-fetched goal.

In order to rise to this challenge, the international community must invest in a global coordinated response for LDCs. One that goes beyond recovery, and that ensures inclusive, sustainable and resilient recovery, to overcome the long-term development challenges and prepare better for future crises. “ Said HE Mr.Khalifa Al-Kuwari, QFFD’s director General

“Least developed countries are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change but have the least access to technology or finance to increase their climate resilience and achieve carbon neutrality. GGGI supports countries from the planning stage, to setting climate policies, to developing green and climate investment projects, and to mobilizing green investment and climate finance. GGGI will continue to accelerate the green transformation in its member countries and regional integration organizations to stop the climate crisis and build back better,” said Dr. Frank Rijsberman, Director-General of GGGI.

This virtual event provided an opportunity for diverse stakeholders to address a sustainable and resilient recovery from COVID-19 with a focus on SDG 2, 3, 8 and 13. The outcome of the discussion will feed into the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) to be hosted by the State of Qatar in Doha in early 2022. The event was also concluded with key messages from H.E Lolwa Al-Khater, Assistant Foreign Minister and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vice Chairperson of QFFD, stressing the importance of solidarity, multilateralism and collective action in the face of global challenges faced by LDCs. “Now is the moment, to design bold actions and invest in building the resilience of individuals and communities to overcome the long-term development challenges and prepare better for future crisis. We will strive to realize the sustainable development goals ambitions and work hand in hand to put together a strengthened framework to support LDCs”

Qatar Fund for Development signs a Contribution Agreement with the Adaptation Fund

Agreement Aims to finance climate change adaptation in most climate-vulnerable countries, including LDCs and SIDS

The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has signed an unearmarked Contribution Agreement with the Adaptation Fund that will go towards funding adaptation and resilience programs for the most vulnerable countries to climate change.

The new contribution aims to finance climate change adaptation projects in developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, including those in least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states(SIDS).

The new partnership between QFFD and the Adaptation Fund will focus on helping the most vulnerable countries adapt and build resilience to climate change and will be strongly aligned with climate change integration guidelines between both parties. In addition to the Fund’s concrete adaptation projects on the ground, the partnership will support the Fund’s actions to foster scaling up of effective projects, and spreading learning and knowledge and innovative solutions in adaptation to help address the continued urgency of climate change and build broader resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The partnership with the Adaptation Fund will help address and combat climate change challenges specifically related to LDCs and SIDS [and other vulnerable developing countries]. Such a partnership will ensure concrete adaptation activities that reduce the adverse effects of climate change facing communities, countries, and sectors. We look forward to working together towards capacity building, for preventive measures, planning, preparedness and management of disasters relating to climate change,” said H.E. Mr. Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, Director General for the Qatar Fund for Development.

“With this first-time contribution to the Adaptation Fund, Qatar is demonstrating its leadership and commitment in supporting climate resilience and adaptation through its ongoing partnerships with and contributions to multilateral climate funds. This contribution to the Fund will directly help improve livelihoods of the most vulnerable communities in developing countries, including in SIDS and LDCs, by financing tangible and effective adaptation actions on the ground. These countries are heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, while also dealing with the impacts of climate change.  We are excited to launch this new partnership with Qatar and QFFD to address these challenges together,” said Mr. Ibila Djibril, Adaptation Fund Board Chair.

The Adaptation Fund was created in 2001 and launched in 2007 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and formally serves the Paris Climate Change Agreement. To date it has committed about US$ 783 million for climate change adaptation and resilience projects and programmes, including 115 adaptation projects in the most vulnerable communities of developing countries around the world with over 9 million direct beneficiaries.

Qatar Fund for Development signs a contribution agreement to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) signs a contribution agreement with International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). This contribution will support the adaptation program for smallholder agriculture.

For his part, Mr. Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, Director General of Qatar Fund for Development, said, “The Covid-19 pandemic and the effects of climate change have taken a particularly heavy toll on the people living in rural areas of developing countries, where the majority of the world’s poorest and hungry people live. For the first time, Qatar Fund for Development cooperates with the International Fund for Agricultural Development as a global strategic partner through this contribution. In order to make a real difference in the lives of rural people and introduce positive changes on a large scale, and in particular support the adaptation program in favor of smallholder agriculture in particular. This agreement comes to serve the first goal concerned with the elimination of all forms of hunger, the eighth goal on economic empowerment and the provision of decent work opportunities, and the thirteenth goal on combating climate change and climate action from the global sustainable development goals, as the rapid rise of hunger in the world confirms the urgent need to improve the incomes and productivity of smallholder farmers and enhance their resilience to the impacts of climate change”

Said Gilbert F. Houngbo, President of IFAD “Small-scale farmers in rural areas play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainability, stability, and security in the world. Food reaches our tables primarily because of their efforts. This financial support from Qatar Fund for Development will enhance our work in increasing the resilience of vulnerable small-scale producers to the impacts of climate change, and help safeguard food security. This agreement will also contribute to the global call for reducing greenhouse gases while ensuring significant income-related benefits for rural people and other vulnerable groups.”

It should be noted that the Adaptation Program for Smallholder Agriculture is the main program of the Fund for directing climate and environmental financing to smallholder farmers, and the program forms part of the regular investment processes that the Fund makes, and benefits from accurate quality control and supervision systems, thanks to joint efforts and generous support From donors, the program is helping eight million affected smallholder farmers in 43 countries to cope with the impact of climate change and build more resilient livelihoods.
