The electricity will be distributed to several Syrian cities, including Damascus, Rif Dimashq, As Suwayda, Daraa, Al Qunaitra, Homs, Hama, Tartus, Latakia, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zur, contributing to the improvement of basic services and enhancing the stability of affected communities.

In this context, Mr. Fahad bin Hamad Al-Sulaiti, the Director General of the Qatar Fund for Development, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in supporting sustainable development and enhancing regional solidarity. He stated, “This initiative represents an important step towards meeting Syria’s electricity needs and reflects a shared commitment among all parties to work collectively for the benefit of the region. The State of Qatar, through the fund will continue to support the brotherly Syrian people, respond to their urgent needs, and strengthen their resilience to ensure a stable and prosperous future.”

On the sidelines of the LDC5 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) hosts an event under the title of Putting Youth at the Forefront: Paving the Way for Youth to Thrive and Prosper, with the participation of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
5th of March 2023
Doha, Qatar
Qatar Fund for Development, with the collaboration of the United Nations Programme (UNDP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), hosted an event under the youth track with the theme of Putting Youth at the Forefront: Paving the Way for Youth to Thrive and Prosper, at the LDC5 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
As the world strives to cope with the challenges and setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency, LDCs have been strongly affected by the socio-economic fallout of the pandemic, further exasperating gaping vulnerabilities, and challenges. This impact is deemed alarming when young people are at the forefront of this challenge. The youth face long-term socio-economic effects and are heavily impacted by these complex challenges that impact their education, employment, livelihoods, mental health, and uncertain prospects. Given the continued increase in children and youth in LDCs, access to quality education becomes an additional burden for building sustainable school systems. This limits their ability to provide access to quality education for all without sustainable investments in education and skill building. In addition, the necessity of post-secondary education in LDCs has left most young men and women trapped in precarious and informal employment structures.
By highlighting these persistent issues and problems, this main event brings together young entrepreneurs and vulnerable groups to discuss the goals needed to enable young people to not only prepare and survive in situations of emergencies but to thrive and prosper and realize their full potential. The discussion also addresses the opportunities and challenges faced by youth relating to the Sustainable Development Goals, how to overcome these challenges, strengthen resilience, and take action to contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda by replacing fear with hope, and division into togetherness.
H.E. Mr. Khalifa Al Kuwari, Director General at QFFD stated: “We must continue to provide opportunities for the young people to ensure they become the leaders we aspire to have in the future. We must also allow them to tap into their full potential by equipping them with the needed skills in civil society, business and beyond. Above all, we must encourage them to be change agents and advocates for societies to advance and prosper.”
Through hosting such event, QFFD hopes to allow young people recognized as agents and partners of change, and when provided with the necessary skills and opportunities, young people have endless potential to drive innovative solutions and social progress to start giving back to their communities and lead them to sustainable development and change.

The presence of high unemployment of the youth population and the financial gap to support technologies suggests an underlying fundamental which fail to capacitate the youths to form their own businesses and financial independence.

At Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) we are committed to support entrepreneurs and considering Small and medium size enterprise’s (SMEs) capacity to drive economic growth and job creation. In 2013, QFFD responded to the soaring unemployment rates in Tunisia and support its economic development through entrepreneurships and technology with an endowment of US$ 97 million.

QFFD worked with seven partners, through which support was provided to entrepreneurs and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by implementing programs focused on improving access to finance and increasing capacity building. Micro and small finance loans were provided to empower entrepreneurs, and an integrated technology hub was launched to offer technical and financial support to entrepreneurs and innovative startups.

We set the ambitious target of creating 100,000 direct and indirect jobs. Midway through the program, QFFD has supported creations of 72,866 direct and indirect jobs. The fund aims to provide 100,000 job opportunities for the Tunisian youth by the end of 2021.

The partnership of QFFD aims to enhance youth empowerment in entrepreneurship projects that will insure the individual’s economic sustainability. Sustainable youth entrepreneurship is the main channel through which economic independence can be pursued.

The beneficiaries of the youth empowerment projects testified their success, sharing her story Naima Jebali who worked in market gardening and beekeeping said “I carried out a study for the creation of an agricultural project in the rural area of El Fahs. I started my project with fairly simple means, but now thanks to my olive tree market gardening activity which marked my beginnings, my project has been twice rewarded with medals and trophies, being elected best totally organic virgin olive oil without additives in the twenty-four governorates of Tunisia.”

Another successful entrepreneur is Mariem Aliét. With the financial and technincal support she recieved from QFFD’s partnership with Zitouna Tamkeen she was able to open a well equipped coffee shop with the best equipments in the local market offering a modern service to the local community. In addition to generating more jobs opportunuties for the community.

The efforts at QFFD to support youth empowerment is a continues effort. The successful outcomes of this project indicate that with the support of partners across the world and the commitment and determination of the youth, financial independence and stability can be obtained to various communities.

Qatar Fund for Development inaugurates the “Qatar Mosque” as part of the Rawabi City project in Palestine

Qatar Fund for Development inaugurated the Qatar Mosque in the Rawabi city project in Palestine in the presence of the Palestinian Prime Minister His Excellency Dr. Muhammad Shtayyeh and a delegation from the State of Qatar headed by His Excellency Mr. Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, Director General of Qatar Fund for Development, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bayti Real Estate Investment Company, which owns the project. The founding partner is the Palestinian businessman Mr. Bashar Al-Masry and the Mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, in addition to important VIP’s from the Palestinian community.

The mosque was built on a total area of about 8,400 square meters, and the capacity of the mosque is estimated at about 3,000 worshipers, including one prayer room for men and another for women, in addition to a multi-use hall and various facilities. By opening the mosque, it will contribute to meeting the residents of the city and will play a fundamental role in reviving the city and neighboring villages, especially in important religious events.

It is worth noting that Qatar Mosque is part of the first phase of the project, with a total of 6 residential neighborhoods, which provide about 2000 housing units in addition to various office spaces and a commercial market with more than 100 brands. The project also includes various public facilities such as Rawabi Academy, the Grand Roman Amphitheater and public parks.

Rawabi is the only integrated city in the West Bank, as it was established in 2007. The city has also contributed to providing direct job opportunities for more than 800 Palestinian employees working to develop this vital project in addition to about 10,000 indirect job opportunities. The project also contributed to providing high-end housing units for people with income. The Mediterranean, in a modern style, contains all the important amenities for its residents.

Partnering with the QFFD, UN-Habitat will contribute to the social and economic recovery of conflict-affected areas by developing and implementing an effective debris management strategy and the removal of debris. In addition there is a training component for young people who will work on recycling, and reuse of debris from damaged buildings, which will be reused to rehabilitate and reconstruct other houses.

The Deputy Director General of Projects Development at QFFD, Misfer bin Hamad Al-Shahwani stated: “ The crisis in Yemen has created many intractable problems that need long-term development solutions. We are proud of this strategic cooperation with UN-Habitat, as this agreement will contribute to creating a healthy clean environment, improve livelihoods and help internally displaced persons.”

“This project will improve the living conditions of the host community and the internally displaced in Sa’ada City and improve the overall environment of the city,” he said.
